Why do you need a pin and a pak code for an ID card?
According to the information contained on the pages of TsNAPs , "when receiving a passport, the person in whose name the passport is issued must, with the help of an employee, change the initial values of PIN1/PUK1 and PIN2/PUK2 with their own combination of numbers and take measures to ensure confidential storage of this information. It should be noted that the specified digital combinations are not stored by any DMS systems, but are contained only on the ID card chip.
PIN1 and PIN2 are required to read and enter (or change) information on the ID card chip. For example: change of place of residence, marriage or divorce, while it is not necessary to change the ID card.
If each of the PIN codes is entered incorrectly three times in a row, the possibility of correction will be automatically blocked. To unlock this feature, the ID card owner will need to enter the corresponding PUK code.
If the owner of the ID card does not remember his PIN and PUK codes and access to the contactless electronic medium is blocked, his ID card does not lose its validity and can be used during its validity period. However, in this case, the use of the ID card will be partially limited.
If the owner of the ID card wishes to use his passport in full, he will need to contact any unit of the State Migration Service or the Center for the Provision of Administrative Services to issue a new passport."
It should be noted that the PIN is a personal identification number consisting of four digits (except 0000), intended for reading information and making changes to the protected data groups of the ID card chip. PUK is a personal authorization code that consists of eight digits (except 00000000) and is used to unlock access to the ID card in case of loss or incorrect PIN entry.
The State Migration Service of Ukraine provides a very convenient information table on its website , which helps to understand in more detail and clearly what PIN and PUK codes are.
